CHEST TUBE INSERTION
Chest tube placement is an essential intervention used to restore breathing in patients with hemo/pneumothorax. This is a demonstration of chest tube insertion in the non-emergent setting.
SECONDARY SURVEY
The secondary survey is a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s injuries. It is performed after stabilization of Airway, Breathing, and Circulation (ABCs) of the initial assessment.
INTERVENTIONS FOR HEAD TRAUMA

BURR HOLES
Dr. Juliet Nalwanga demonstrates how to drill burr holes, which includes the anatomy, instrumentation, and troubleshooting.
SAPHENOUS CUTDOWN
The saphenous cutdown is used to quickly secure large-bore intravenous access when typical methods have failed. Dr. Staffan Bergstrom of the Karolinska Institute demonstrates the saphenous cutdown on a deceased donor.

BELOW KNEE BACKSLAB
Dr. Peter Muwanguzi, orthopedic surgeon and KATC co-lead coordinator, gives a demonstration on how to build a below-knee backslab cast using Plaster of Paris.
PELVIC BINDER
Pelvic fractures can be deadly but non-apparent sources of bleeding. Pelvic binders can be quickly made from bedsheets, and held together by forceps, tape, or rods.
Cervical Spine Stabilization
An injured patient should always be assumed to have a cervical spine injury until ruled out. KATC instructors demonstrate how to stabilize the spine, maneuver an injured patient, secure a cervical collar, or improvise stabilization with a blanket.
